
Sabaki River Camp and Cottageat Sabaki River Estuary, KenyaThe Karabu FamilyRodgers Karabu has always lived on the Kenya coast, home of his Giriama Tribe. He has lived near the Sabaki River at this site for over 25 years. He is an accomplished fisherman and farmer, growing maize and watermelon. He is keenly interested in world and local politics and has been active in the efforts to secure land titles for the Giriama. Rodgers is a leader in the movement to conserve the estuary and has led hundreds of scientists and birdwatchers to the area. In 1998 he bought and renovated the Malindi Cottage and property, which he manages with his daughters, Janet, Zawadi, Karen and Bahati, and son Mtawali. Seeing his children through secondary school is a prime concern.
GuidesRodgers and his family guide visitors to the attractions of the Malindi area. They are familiar with the birds and plants, and know the trails and neighbors. Day-long walks upriver, to distant villages, and up the coast are possible.
